The first step is to find out what version BIOS your system is running, you will also need to know the exact make and model of your motherboard. In the photo above, you can see my computers post screen. This is the first screen you see when you turn your computer on unless your graphics card has a display first. You can see in the picture above the motherboard make, model, and BIOS version are all on the same line. Not all motherboards will display this, but they should at least display the BIOS version. If the motherboard make and manufacturer is not listed, you may have to open up your computer and look on the motherboard itself for this information. After you are armed with the data, you need get online and go to the manufacturer's website. Every motherboard manufacturer should have a support section where you can find a download for your particular motherboard model.  Check to see if there is even a flash available for your motherboard.  If the version BIOS is already the same as the most recent on the manufacturer's website, then there is no need to flash your BIOS.   After you find your updated BIOS image you will need to get the BIOS flash utility while you are there. Download both these files and move on to the next step.

If you do not already have a boot disk you can download a windows 98SE boot disk image here. You will need a second floppy disk to put your BIOS image and BIOS utility on. I recommend that you use a brand new disk for this. As soon as you get both floppies ready reboot your computer and boot off your windows 98 boot disk that you just made with the boot image above. When the windows 98 boot screen comes up just push the F5 button on your keyboard and it will bypass the 98 boot screen and give you pure DOS. It is important that you flash your BIOS in pure DOS, you do not want to have any mouse, CD-ROM, memory managers and etc. running while you are flashing your BIOS, you want the purest DOS you can get to avoid errors.
