Stealth Drive bay  Page read 5395 times

One of the easiest and what I believe the best detail in moding is the stealth drive bay. Basically all you need to finish this mod is the drive blank you took out when you put your CD-Rom in.

This article will be quick just for the fact that theirs not much to it so rambling on for multiple pages will be just a waste of your time. First thing you need is a blank drive bay of course Second will be a CD-Rom that doesn't have a flap. It has to have the CD tray end exposed And lastly you will need some velcro. Tools for the job are easy. If you are moding a plastic case then you will not need any tools. Because I am using an aluminum case I used some dykes and a grinding wheel.

To start off with we have to make our blank drive cover. Break or cut the hooks off of the side of the blank so it has no way to hold itself in to the case. You may need to sand the edges to make it a nice smooth fit if your using a cheep case. If your using aluminum then you will need to cut the wings off the end and I used a grinder to smooth the ruff edges.

Finally attach the velcro together and pull the backing off of one of the sides. Attach the velcro to the Face of the CD tray and then loosen the screws securing the CD-Rom in to the case. recess the CD-Rom in to the case and pull the backing off the other piece of velcro that should be already velcroed to the piece on the CD-Rom. Take your blank that you made earlier and push it on to the other piece of velcro make sure that its loosely fit on the edges so not to bind the CD-Roms opening and closing movement. Finally adjust your CD-Rom in the case so the blank face is flush and tighten the screws. Walla you now have a stealth drive. You will have to right click the CD in My Computer and tell it to eject when you want to open it. When you are reloading the system or swapping CD's allot you can remove the face. (That's why we used velcro.)

Update: get a rubber foot that has a sticky side and stick it to the back side of the face plate just over the button on the drive, you may need to cut it down to make the face plate sit right, but as the velco lets it have a bit of movement you can now just press the face plate and you drive will open.
