The card that I will be using for comparison will be the MSI Geforce 4 TI 4200 8X VIVO (MS-8894). The photos above will show you the differences in each card. I like the cooling on the Geforce 4 much better.  You can get a closer look at the cooler on the Geforce 4 in the last photo.

The benchmarks that I will be using in this review are as follows:

Static
  • 3D Mark 2001 SE (ver. 330)
  • 3D Mark 2003 (ver. 330)
  • GL Mark
  • Code Creatures
Real time
  • Return to Castle Wolfenstein
  • Unreal Tournament 2003
  • Comanche 4

Overclocking

The Geforce FX is split into two operating modes. One is for 2D mode and the other is for 3D mode. This is nice because when your surfing the web or working in word you don't need your video card clocked as high as if you where playing a game. The stock speed for 3D mode are 325Mhz core and 550Mhz memory and the stock speed for 2D mode are 270Mhz core and 550Mhz memory.

The photos above show the different coolbits menu for the Geforce 4 and the Geforce FX. As you can see in the second photo, the Geforce FX has a pull down menu that will allow you to change the operating frequency of the 2D mode and the 3D mode. In order to enable this, you need to change a few lines in your registry. I have a file that will change these settings for you, you can download it here.

The Geforce FX also came with a new feature to the coolbits overclock utility that will make all overclockers happy. You can push the auto detect button that sites right near the test settings button and the drivers will auto detect the cards highest possible overclock. I found that this new feature gets your overclock very close and saves you tons of time testing different settings. The autodetect put the card at 372Mhz core and 646 memory, this was very close to the max OC I could give this card. The final settings that I was able to reach where 385Mhz core and 650Mhz memory. The Geforce 4 TI 4200 clock settings will be 250MHz core and 512MHz memory stock and 305Mhz core and 605Mhz memory overclocked.

Now that we have a stable overclock, lets see what this card can do.
